Small Steps
It’s been some time since I posted something new; and the longer it has been the harder it seems to get back into the groove. The perception of the task is that it gets bigger and bigger. So I’ve decided to try and get back in with small steps. This mindset also helps frame some of the overwhelming things going on right now. Small steps.
There is a ton going on right now in the world. It is hard not to obsess over the news. I spend time thinking about what is happening that can inform actions I can take now and prepare for the future. I find this framing helpful as it keeps me from dwelling on the news and perhaps leaves me feeling helpless. Reminds me of a quote I read today: “Let go, or be dragged."
For example, I’m not following the stock market very closely. I have investments in my retirement account that I don’t need right away. I am not following every daily gyration. I am reading about what people are doing to make remote work successful. I have teams of people with whom I work who are all remote right now. I am paying attention to how others are helping in their community. I am exploring how I can help in mine.
At work, I am thinking about where some of these changes will impact business. What can I do now to prepare? I’m reminded of the Wayne Gretzky quote “skate to where the puck will be.” I read someone on responding to a disaster - “think of where we’ll be in two weeks, then what you wish you had done now with that in mind.”
I’m keeping my family safe. I’m recommending ways to keep my clients and their employees safe. I’m eliminating unneeded costs in my business and recommending the same for my clients. I’m thinking of how my customers will be impacted, and their customers, and their suppliers.
Take care of yourself. Think where you will be in two weeks and what will you tell yourself?
